Start with the task and the decisions it requires. Choose autonomy only where it makes the system more useful.
Choose the level of autonomy
The design depends on whether the path is known. An agent is useful only when choosing the next step adds value.

Predictable logicInterpret an enquiry, retrieve approved facts, then route it to a defined response or staff handoff.
Bounded interpretationSelect tools and adapt the next step to a result, within limits on actions, time and cost.
Controlled tool useOur evidence today: the IMFIT case supports the first two patterns. Agentic systems are a development direction that needs separate implementation and evaluation.
See the IMFIT workflow evidenceAnthropic distinguishes predefined workflows from agents that dynamically direct their own processes and tool use. That distinction is useful when deciding how much flexibility a task needs.
MCP or an API can expose a business capability. A dependable application still needs appropriate permissions, clear tool behavior, state management, failure handling and evaluation.
These are proposed acceptance questions, not claims of an existing Anvayric agent deployment.
Agentic capabilities belong within our broader focus on AI applications and data integration. Business-specific context, a usable interface and reliable operations remain necessary whether the next step is chosen by a rule, a person or a model.
Anthropic: Building effective agents, published December 2024. Used for the workflow/agent distinction, not as a claim about current tooling. The publisher notes that its tooling guidance has since evolved.
